On Tuesday, June 19, 2023, at approximately 10:45 p.m., Connecticut State Police responded to a single-car accident on Interstate 95 in Groton. The accident occurred near Exit 88 and involved a 2019 Honda Accord that had veered off the right side of the road and struck a tree.

The driver of the Accord, identified as 23-year-old John Smith of New London, was transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London with serious injuries. The passenger in the Accord, identified as 22-year-old Jane Doe of Groton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
